Hosts of the first Beach Volleyball World Tour event in 2020, Iran took all medals available at the men-only one-star tournament in Qeshm. The top spot in the podium was occupied by Alireza Aghajani and Javad Firouzpourbandpei.
The 21-year-old Aghajani and the 22-year-old Firouzpourbandpei upset the country’s top team of Bahman Salemi and Arash Vakili and posted a 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) win to secure their first-ever World Tour gold medal in just their second international tournament together – they took silver last year in Bandar Torkaman.
Salemi and Vakili, who made history at last year’s World Championships in Hamburg becoming the first Iranian team to win a match at the event, topped the tournament in Bandar Torkaman three months ago and now have four World Tour medals – one gold, two silver and a bronze.
The third Iranian team to step in the podium was the one of Abolhamed Mirzaali and Rahman Raoufi, who downed Qatar’s Saifeddine Elmajid and Benlouaer Ziad in straight sets (21-15, 21-18) in the bronze medal match.
The next stop of the World Tour will in the Cook Islands, from January 14-17, and only men will compete at the one-star event in Oceania.
