Mystery injury rules out Kira of new season return
The long-awaited return of reigning Olympic and World champions Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig is on hold after the pair confirmed they will not appear in World Tour tournaments in January and February.
Injuries have kept blocker Walkenhorst sidelined since the end of the 2017 season which saw the team win the World Tour Finals in Hamburg, while Ludwig took the 2018 campaign off to start a family.
Kira, 28, has only played in six tournaments since the end of the 2016 season but still managed to comeback to triumph at the World Championships with Laura in Vienna in 2017.
Writing on their Facebook page, Walkenhorst said: “There is bad news from the medical department. After I had to deal with injuries again and again, I was now prescribed a forced break.
“I could never train for more than 30 minutes in the last few weeks. Either the rib popped out or the hip or shoulder locked up. Despite all the treatments, the condition has not improved, which is a real mystery to all doctors and physio.
“We therefore had to decide to give my body the necessary rest. This means that in January, unfortunately, we will not have the so long awaited Ludwig/Walkenhorst comeback. I have to cancel the tournaments in January and February.”
Everyone at the Beach Major Series wishes Kira a speedy recover. Hopefully we can see you on the sand sooner rather than later.
