Olympic champ finds a partner for the 2018 season
Watch out, there’s an Olympic champion back on the court for the summer season! Kira Walkenhorst has revealed she will return to the sand and has found a teammate in the process.
With regular teammate Laura Ludwig on a ‘baby break’ and due to give birth in June, Kira has waited until she returned to full fitness from hip and shoulder surgery.
Kira’s new partner is rising star Leonie Körtzinger. The 21-year-old is, like Kira, a blocker but already has FIVB World Tour experience, which has included an excellent fourth place finish in the one-star tournament in Shepparton, Australia, last season with Sandra Seyfferth.
Together with Sandra, Leonie won a stop in the smart Beach Cup back in July but she will continue to play as a blocker with Kira moving back into defense to experience a different view of the sport she has won all there is to win in beach volleyball.
Good luck girls and who knows, we still might see you on the Major Series this summer!
Below, Leonie celebrates with Sandra at the German Cup stop in Sankt Peter-Ording.
