Beach volleyball superstars Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst beat off competition from a host of Germany’s top sports teams – including the national soccer team – to win Germany’s prestigious Team of the Year award.

The Golden Girls from Hamburg, who won the World Championship and World Tour Final double this season, scooped the award for the second year in a row having collected the 2016 prize after winning the Olympic title on the Copacabana.

What’s more, on a night to remember for beach volleyball, their coach, Jürgen Wagner, was named Trainer of the Year.

The girls, however, will face a fight against time to get their 2018 season up and running with Walkenhorst recovering from an operation on a hip injury.

But injury did not stop them in 2017 – they only competed in five tournaments together during the season – as they stormed to success firstly in Vienna and then Hamburg two weeks later to end the season in style.

How do they it? Why not read our team spirit story where Laura explains how their relationship on and off the court has made them one of the most feared teams on the beach.

Congratulations, girls!
