Brazil dominated the second edition of the Military Beach Volleyball World Championships as the host country took home five of the six medals in play in the tournament disputed last weekend in Rio de Janeiro.

Alvaro Filho/Saymon Barbosa and Agatha Bednarczuk/Duda Lisboa topped the podium in the courts built at Rio 2016 Olympic Park by winning the men’s and women’s tournaments.

In the men’s side, the winners of the Swatch Fort Lauderdale Major back in February came from behind to defeat fellow Brazilians Vitor Felipe - who had won the first edition of the tournament in 2014 – and Guto Carvalhaes in three sets (13-21, 21-19, 15-10).

Saymon showed all his mental strength to climb the podium after struggling with physical issues throughout the week.

“It was an amazing experience to represent my country and the military forces in this event,” said Alvaro, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. “I am happy for the award, but I would like to congratulate Saymon for his strength. He cut his eyebrow in the first day and played the final match with a back injury but neither stopped him.”

World champions Evandro Gonçalves and Andre Loyola completed the all-Brazilian men’s podium as they defeated Germany’s Armin Dollinger and Alexander Walkenhorst in two sets (21-13, 21-14) to win bronze.

In the women’s tournament, Brazil competed for gold as well with Agatha and Duda (the MVP of the tournament), the silver medalists of the Swatch World Tour Finals, defeating Larissa Franca and Ana Patricia Ramos in straight sets. Larissa’s regular partner, Talita Antunes, could not compete because on an injury.

China won the bronze medal with Chang Liu and Jingyan Shao as their compatriots Bing Bai and Huimin Zhao could not play and forfeited the third place match.
