Dutch women and Italian men top the podium at FIVB World Tour event

The Aalsmeer indoor beach volleyball event ended with a few surprises…

Italians do it best

Italian beach boys Marco Caminati and Enrico Rossi claimed gold at the Aalsmeer one star men’s tournament on the brand new 2018 FIVB World Tour. Throughout the tournament the eighth-seeded South Europeans were undefeated. It’s Marco Caminato’s second medal after the 2015 Lucerne Open with former partner Alex Ranghieri. In a 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) win against William Kolinske and Miles Evans, seeded 10th, the Italians triumphed over the North Americans. Third on the podium were Turkey’s Mermer and Giginoglu. The bronze medal match was a spectacular show. The Ukranians challenged Mermer/Giginoglu in a dramatic three set thriller (13-21, 21-19, 18-16). Twenty-two-year-old Mermer got hold of a medal for the first time in his career.

Impressing family and friends

There is no better scenario for a team then winning on home sand and becoming heroes in front of family and friends. Local heroines Joy Stubbe and Madelein Meppelink fulfilled the home crowd’s hopes and remained undefeated throughout the tournament. Twenty-year-old Stubbe won her first medal on the FIVB World Tour whereas Meppelink was no stranger to winning platform – with her 11th FIVB podium finish. The two time Olympian and her young partner beat German Kim Behrens and Sandra Ittlinger in a two set finale. USA’s Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen claimed bronze in a hard battle against Japan’s Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami. In two sets (25-23, 21-18) they fought hard to claim their third medal on the FIVB World Tour after gold in Nanjing and Ulsan earlier in 2017.
