So far, we only knew a scenario like the current one from the fiction of various apocalypse movies. In reality, of course, none of us really have any idea how to deal with it. Only one thing unites us in this challenging time: the certainty that we have to put down everything that is not directly related to the elimination of the virus. A logical conclusion that, however, has a dramatic impact on all of us.
Experts are now predicting that the pandemic will peak in July and August. And that, in turn, means for us that currently, nobody can assume the responsibility to approach the implementation of the planned events with a clear conscience and with full conviction. After extensive discussions with the International Federation, our sponsors as well as partners and representatives from the cities of Vienna and Hamburg, we decided to cancel the two Major tournaments. And we can no longer contribute to the upgrade of the event in Gstaad.
We are sad to announce this decision. At the moment, we only have hope that the global crisis will soon subside and be under control. Then we will start the work to realize our events in 2021 with full energy and unwavering commitment.
My thanks go to everyone who has shared and supported our enthusiasm for beach volleyball over the past 25 years. I firmly believe that we will be able to provide proof of our subline again next year:

After a truly magical first World Tour Finals in 2017, Hamburg and the city's iconic Rothenbaum Stadium will again host beach volleyball's end-of-season spectacular in 2018.
Between August 15-19, the world’s best beach volleyball players will reunite to fight for a share of a cool 800,000 US Dollars in prize money - and the title of World Tour Finals champion.
After hosting a Major in 2016, the 2017 tournament was another huge success as capacity crowds flocked to the Rothenbaum. Packed ranks of fans watched on as local heroes Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst secured the women’s title and Americans golden oldies Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena took the men's prize.
The noise generated inside the stadium sent shivers down the spines of every single player and in August the Rothenbaum will be rocking once more as the crème de la crème of beach volleyball will battle it out for one of the three coveted places on the podium.
Last season’s tournament was one to remember as Hamburg hosted its second successive event in what was five days of top class beach volleyball.
The story of the week in the Rothenbaum was undoubtedly Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst’s victory in a breathtaking final against Brazilian stars Agatha/Duda. The Germans prevailed with a nail-biting win in a dramatic deciding set.
There was also a unique atmosphere last season, thanks to the first ever series of night matches, played under the stars inside the Rothenbaum.
Although beach volleyball is no stranger to Hamburg thanks to the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of organizer Frank Mackerodt, 2016's beach volleyball extravaganza at the Rothenbaum was the first as a Beach Major Series – as two beach-loving forces combined.
The famous Rothenbaum Stadium is steeped in tennis history having hosted hundreds of top-class tournaments, but, once more in August 2018, the clay court will be replaced by almost 2,000 tons of golden sand. The stadium’s iconic roof structure and 13,000-capacity help make the tournament yet another one to remember in the history of beach volleyball.
Just like the previous two seasons, beach fans will get to enjoy entry to the Rothenbaum absolutely free!
Details of the popular VIP packages will also soon be announced, so watch this space - and remember everyone will be treated to the dazzling entertainment available inside the Beach Village.
For the past two years, the tournaments in Hamburg have been covered from every angle across all of our entertaining social media platforms.
The official hashtag of the 2018 Hamburg Finals is simply #HamburgFinals – and live and exclusive behind-the-scenes content will appear on a daily basis before, during and after the excitement on the sand.
