There was to be no dream American double at the Cincinnati Open as the next generation of Brazilian beach volleyball stars cruised to a straight sets victory on Saturday night.

Gustavo Carvalhaes and Saymon Barbosa, both just 22, made light work of Canada’s more experienced Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter.

It completed a fantastic week for the young pair as they blitzed their opposition by winning all seven of their matches in the competition.

Binstock and Schachter came into the final in top form themselves, having won all six of their games – but the Canadian seventh seeds were blown away in just 33 minutes by the brilliant Brazilians.

After a tight opening set, which Guto and Saymon won 22-20, it was a completely different story in the second set as the Canadians could only muster eight points as the Brazilians dominated and won with ease.

It was Guto and Saymon’s first gold from what was their first final appearance and topped an incredible tournament which had also seen them record an excellent victory over American favorites Tri Bourne and John Hyden in the quarterfinals.

There wasn’t total disappointment for the host nation, however, as Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser picked up a bronze medal in an all-American third-place match. The tournament second seeds were too strong for countrymen John Mayer and Ryan Doherty, coming through in straight sets – also in 33 minutes.

Remember the action on the sand continues to come thick and fast – it’s only two weeks until our smart Major Hamburg! This week attention turns to the Grand Slam in Moscow and if you want to know more about the tournament it’s definitely a good idea to sign-up to our wonderful newsletter!
