It might look like a normal stretch of sand and a pile of metal beams but if you look close enough you can already envisage a beautiful packed crowd and the spine-tingling crowning of the Olympic champions!

Yes, with under 100 days until the start of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Copacabana is having a makeover ahead of one of the greatest shows on sand!

Beach volleyball’s spiritual home has begun its facelift. When finished the area will incorporate a 12,000-capacity center court, five training courts and two warm-courts all in time for the first day of competition on Saturday 6 August. Perfect.

But what does all of this Olympic talk have to do with Swatch Major Series we hear you ask! Well if you didn’t know, we are playing a very, very important role in the Olympic beach volleyball in the coming months.

Can you begin to imagine what this scene will look like in three months’ time? Photo credit: FIVB.Can you begin to imagine what this scene will look like in three months’ time? Photo credit: FIVB.

Firstly, our smart Major Hamburg is the final stop on the World Tour that gives players the chance to gain crucial Olympic qualification points. Failure in Hamburg is not an option and it’s going to get seriously competitive in more ways than one – and we can’t wait!

And secondly, at our Gstaad Major on 9 July, those players who have secured their qualification for the Olympics will then learn who they will face on the Copacabana in Rio!

How unique does the following sound?! The draw for one of the most iconic Olympic sports, which will take place on arguably one of the most famous beaches in the world, will be made in the tranquil surroundings of the picturesque town of Gtsaad 10,000 meters above sea level! That’s how we like to do things around here at Swatch Major Series!

Remember to keep up-to-date with all things Swatch Major Series and the Olympics you can either visit our website and social media channels, or by simply registering to receive our newsletter. It’s that easy – we offer this all free of charge because we are really super nice people! Honest.

Enjoy and see you @ the beach!
