The Olympic Games will be just 100 days away this Wednesday so to get everyone in the Samba mood what better way to prepare than a beach volleyball tournament in Brazil this week!

The tour takes a tantalizing trip to South America for the Fortaleza Open and some of the biggest names in beach volleyball are bidding to ensure they guarantee their place on the Copacabana in August.

Make no mistake this tournament is a biggy – you only have to look at the entry list to realize this is going to be another wonderful week full of thrills and spills on the sand.

Take the men for example: there are two of the current top five provisional Olympic-ranked teams gunning for gold, including home favorites and last year’s Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals bronze medal-winners Evandro Goncalves and Pedro Solberg (BRA).

Americans Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson are also in the mix as top seeds for this tournament but that only tells half of a potentially gripping story with a host of teams battling for all-important points in their bid to secure Olympic glory.

It will soon be make or break time for the likes of Chilean cousins Esteban and Marco Grimalt, Canadians Josh Binstock/Sam Schachter and Venezuelans Jesus Villafañe and Jackson Henriquez as they all strive for Olympics qualification…and time and tournaments are running out!

It’s almost a similar story in the women’s half of the draw with three of the top five provisional Olympic rankings strutting their stuff this week. It goes without saying that you can’t ignore Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas (BRA) – well they are the world champions! – and then there’s silver medalists at our Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals in Fort Lauderdale Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst (GER) also vying for serving and spiking supremacy.

Last week we focused on the talents of up-and-coming Vanuatu pair Linline Matauatu and Miller Pata and their goal of reaching their first-ever Olympics. And the ever-smiling duo can do their chances no harm with a strong week in Fortaleza. Here’s hoping they’re happy this time next week!

It promises to be another breathless week of non-stop action – but do yourselves a favor: take it easy and follow all of the action on our website and join the fun on our social media pages. Enjoy!
