So far in China this week we’ve had wind, rain, thunder, lightning, young Polish guys ripping it up against some fancied opposition and some favorites struggling for form.

The drama continued in the women’s half of the draw as the tournament saw plenty more twists and turns on Thursday – just how we like it!

The biggest shock of the day was the news that American third seeds Brooke Sweat and Lauren Fendrick crashed out of the tournament. The pair, who lit up the Porec Major last year, lost a decisive third pool match and had to wave goodbye to a place in the knockout stages.

We highlighted their fight for improvement on Thursday but the other top seeds who looked in trouble did manage to squeeze themselves into the next phase.

Italians Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Oris Toth bounced back from an opening game defeat but won their next two which booked their boarding pass into the second round.

Reigning champs from Switzerland Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr are also in the second round, but German second seeds Karla Borger and Britta Büthe will have to face a battle in the first round after losing one of their three pool matches.

All of the teams, however, must be shuddering at the thought of facing Americans April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings, who have crushed every team in their path this week. The top seeds have dropped just 74 points in three pool games. That is just pretty damn good!

And last but by no means least, we’ve got another underdog story! German qualifiers Teresa Mersmann and Julia Sude made it through to the second round after a stunning run of three successive pool matches, including a win over Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug (ARG).

The tournament is now approaching the much-anticipated final stages with the men’s final on Saturday and the women’s on Sunday.

Stay tuned on Monday when we give you the lowdown on who won what and how!
