The weather in China this week might not be perfect for beach volleyball but the action in the women’s main draw of the Xiamen Open is really going to hot up over the next few days.

Thunderstorms have been providing a dramatic backdrop to the tournament and the race to reach the knockout stages is sure to be just as electric.

The big question on everyone’s lips is can American superstars Kerri Walsh Jennings and partner April Ross claim a third successive World Tour medal and their second gold in the tournament in three years?

The number one seeds, who claimed gold in style in 2013, find themselves in a typically tough group in their mission to reach the next phase in Pool A, which includes Chinese hopefuls and 2014 silver medallists Fan Wang and Yuan Yue.

While the Americans are the undoubted favorites it would be silly to ignore a whole host of potential champions in what appears to be an incredibly competitive tournament.

Twelve months ago the Swiss dominated the latter stages of the competition – winning gold and bronze.

Last year’s champions Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr are the seventh seeds while their fellow countrywomen Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre will be aiming to go one better and reach the final after receiving bronze.

And as we’re talking of last year, Argentine pair Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug came oh-so close to taking gold but had to settle for silver in 2015. They start the tournament as sixth seeds in Pool F.

Meanwhile, there is a distinct German flavor to Pool B which includes second seeds Karla Borger and Britta Büthe. The bronze medalists from the Rio de Janeiro Grand Slam last month are one of three teams from Germany in the group. Viel Glück to those in that particular group!
