Beach Shorts

14.08.2020 - Vienna, Austria

Hello, beach volleyball fans! Excited for the weekend? You’d better be because Friday is supposed to be a big day with one of the most anticipated meetings in the beach volleyball world this year. The German Tour moves this week to Hamburg with the women returning to the sand and the very first match of the tournament will feature Rio 2016 Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst on opposite sides of the court. The match starts at 9am (CET) and you can watch it here.

Several other tournaments will be taking place in Europe across the weekend, but going back to Germany, the country’s national federation has hired a legend of the sport to coordinate its beach program. Across the Atlantic, an American star just had surgery and a new Brazilian team was formed as the country prepares to resume competition next month.

Spare a few minutes and get all the info you need about these topics:

National Tours in Russia, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland

Once again, it will be a weekend filled with beach volleyball in Europe as at least four national tours will be at full pace. Besides the German Tour we already mentioned, three other top nations will host events in the next days. Russian elite teams are competing in Kazan while the Dutch play in Zaanstad and the Polish hit the sand in Myslenice. The continent will also feature National Championships in Latvia (Cesis) and Finland (Tampere).

Jürgen Wagner appointed as Head of Beach Volleyball in Germany

Legendary coach Jürgen Wagner will coordinate the entire beach volleyball program in Germany as he was appointed as the Head of Beach Volleyball by the country’s federation. Wagner, who was coaching Laura Ludwig and Maggie Kozuch, is a two-time Olympic and world champion, having won the titles with Ludwig/Walkenhorst and Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann.

Rosie gets under the knife

American beach volleyball star Sean Rosenthal had shoulder surgery this week to fix a torn rotator cuff, an injury the 40-year-old defender had while competing in the AVP this season.  We wish you a speedy recovery, Rosie!

Social Media: Taiana has a new partner

Brazilian defender Taiana Lima announced this week her new partner as the 36-year-old player will pair with former indoor star Paula Pequeno. A two-time volleyball Olympic champion, Paula moved to the sand at the end of last year and was playing with fellow former indoor player Mari until last week. Fernanda Berti, Taiana’s previous partner, has decided to take some time away from the sport. The new team will debut next month, when the Brazilian Tour resumes.

See you next week!
