Brouwer and Meeuwsen start the year on top

05.01.2020 - Vienna, Austria

Beach volleyball stars Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen needed only five days into the New Year to collect their first gold medals in 2020 as the 2013 world champions came out on top of the Dutch Indoor Championships this weekend in Aalsmeer.

The Rio 2016 Olympics bronze medalists won back-to-back golds following their victory at last year’s edition with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) triumph against the second-best Dutch tandem of Christiaan Varenhorst and Steve van de Velde.

“We lost to them twice in 2019, so there was an extra motivation to win it this time,” Brouwer said. “I’m very happy that we won the tournament after a great final match against our friends and training partners. It was a great atmosphere and my son was here, so that was extra nice.”

In the women’s tournament, two-time Olympian Madelein Meppelink could not have regular partner Sanne Keizer by her side, so she joined forces with 19-year-old rising star Emi van Driel and the duo remained undefeated through the weekend, securing the title with a 21-18, 21-17 win over Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon.

“It was very special to be able to play with Emi here,” Meppelink reflected. “She’s super talented and we’ve been training together for a while, so to see our younger players are just getting better, that’s great for Sanne and I as it raises our level in training. It was an enjoyable weekend and a great start for an Olympic year.”
