The wait is over for German beach volleyball star Laura Ludwig as the reigning Olympic and world champion gave birth to her first son, Teo Johnston, last Thursday, she just announced on Facebook.

The baby was born with 4.060kg and 55cm and five days after the expected date and him, Laura and her partner Morph Bowes, head coach of the German women’s national teams, are having a great time together.

“We’re all totally flashed,” she said on her message.

Laura, who took the 2018 season off and last played in the 2017 World Tour Finals last August, is expected to return to the sands in 2019 to defend her world title in her some soil of Hamburg. And a little coincidence might help her and Kira Walkenhorst.

"We'll take the next few weeks to get used to each other, but in August I will start slowly my way back," she added. "I want to be fit again in early 2019 as Kira and I want to defend our world title and I take the fact that Teo's first birthday falls on the first day of the World Championships as a signal."

Laura was not the only beach volleyball start to take a baby break in 2018. Brazilian veteran Talita Antunes did the same and her son, Renato, was born nine days ago.

Welcome to the world, Teo, and congratulations Laura and Morph!
