Olympic champ takes first steps in recovery

Last season’s World Champion and World Tour Finals winner Kira Walkenhorst is back on the sand –and has said she could make a return to competitive action this year.

The reigning Olympic champion has been recovering from shoulder surgery and told us in January she wouldn’t rush back to the beach to risk aggravating the injury.

However, the German blocker posted a photograph on Instagram showing her back in training.

In the post, the 27-year-old said: “Back on the sand!!!!! Good weather in Hamburg and after a week with physiotherapist Jochen in Paderborn, I was allowed to play some ball. Just no hitting and serving yet but I am sure I will be able to play some tournaments this year. See you on the beach.”

With teammate Laura Ludwig taking the 2018 season off to start a family, Kira will need to pick a different partner should she make a return to action. Last season, Walkenhorst partnered Julia Groβner in Fort Lauderdale while Laura sat on the sidelines through injury. The duo then went onto win the World Champs and World Tour Finals double.

We hope to see you on the Major Series before the season’s out, Kira!
