Golden girls’ back-to-back brilliance

Meet the Canadians on a winning streak on the World Tour

After storming to back-to-back gold medals in the past two tournaments, it only seems right that this week’s Tuesday Talents are Canada’s Julie Gordon and Camille Saxton.

The duo are newcomers to the world of beach volleyball having only played in 23 international tournaments between them – but their lack of FIVB World Tour experience hasn’t stopped them from beginning the 2017 season in style with two stunning victories at competitions in Australia in the past month.

First came glory in the one-star Shepparton event before they continued their unbeaten record Down Under last week in the two-star women-only event in Sydney. Across both tournaments they have only dropped one set. Impressive, huh?

Back to back golds here in Australia!!! I'm soooo incredibly excited and proud of how we've been building our game each and every point. Can't believe how much of a beast @mrscamilleee is and I can't wait to keep growing every day together! I have to say my favourite part of all of this would be the kind words and support from everyone here in Manly, back home in Canada, and all over the world. Your love means more than you'll ever know! ❤❤❤ Back to the grind!!! #sisepuede #beachvolleyball #bombsaway

So who is this team who are currently the talk of the World Tour? Of the two, it is Julie who has the most sand under her feet in terms of experience. The 25-year-old from Barrie, Ontario, first sprung onto the international scene in 2014 and was best known for her partnership with Brandie Wilkerson before Wilkerson teamed up Heather Bansley at last year’s Swatch World Tour Finals.

Gordon has 17 international tournaments under her belt – 12 of which came alongside Wilkerson –and the team’s best result came in their final competition together, a ninth place finish at the Long Beach Grand Slam in August.

So overwhelmed that immediately after we won I just burst into happy tears! Can't express how proud I am of @jujugord - your patience, your grit, your defense just WOOOW! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Thanks for going to battle with me everyday! AND to the tournament staff & volunteers here in Australia - you guys have been SO amazing to us, I don't think I've ever met kinder souls 💕 #beachvolleyball #fivbsydney #FIVBworldtour #australia #teamcanada #gold 🥇

Now when you hear the name ‘Saxton’ in beach volleyball you think Canadian Olympian, Twitter joker and our very own blogger Ben Saxton. But Ben’s sister, 25-year-old Camille, is now making a name for herself at the beach having made her debut last year – and what a start it’s been.

Of course, the Saxton family are no strangers to success in volleyball: Camille and Ben’s mother and father both played indoor volleyball at the elite level and now Camille is already on her way to achieving great things on the sand…and she already has more gold medals on the World Tour than her big brother! Talk about sibling rivalry!

Two gold medals from three tournaments has been a dream start for this new team – and it further enhances Canada’s growing reputation as a country with their feet well and truly in a good place on the court.

Keep it up girls – see you on Poreč
